Wedding License

Lake Tahoe is located in two States -- Nevada and California -- and the appropriate marriage license must be issued depending on the location of your wedding. As we are licensed to officiate weddings in both States, please allow us to assist you with the requirements for your particular ceremony location.

State of Nevada

State of Nevada, Local Marriage License Offices

  *Douglas county  (Lake Tahoe and Minden/Gardnerville offices)

  *Washoe County  (Reno and Incline Village Offices)    

  *Carson City

No residency in the State of Nevada required to marry.

Licenses issued by each county, may be used throughout the State.

Application Fee: $60.00     Certified copy: $ 15.00 

Waiting Period: none.

Expiration Period: One year from date of issue.

Blood Test: None required.

Previous Marriage: Required to know the date your marriage ended. No documents required.

Witnesses: One witness required, no age requirement and up to two may sign.

Age and Identification Requirements:

18 years and up; Both parties MUST appear in person with a valid Drivers License, Certified Copy of Birth Certificate, or any State or Federal picture ID (only one required)

16-18 years of Age; parental consent (notarized) or parents to be present at the clerks office to give consent signatures

Under 16; by court order only.

Marriage License’s may be obtained from any county in the State of Nevada for use at Lake Tahoe

(Marriage License must be presented to the Minister prior to the ceremony)

 

State of California

Public Marriage License

  *Eldorado County  (South Lake Tahoe)

  *Placer County  (North Lake Tahoe)

No residency in the State of California required to marry.

Licenses issued by each county, may be used throughout the State.

Application Fee: Fees and hours of issuance vary by county

Waiting Period: none

Expiration Period: 90 days from date of issue

Blood Test: None required

Witnesses: One witness required, no age requirement and up to two may sign.

Previous Marriage: Required to know the date your marriage ended. Some counties may require documentation.

Documentation required: Both parties MUST appear in person with a valid Drivers License, Certified Copy of Birth Certificate, or any State or Federal picture ID (only one required)

Certified Copies of the Marriage license may be requested from the County Recorder as applicable.

A Public Marriage License may by obtained from any county in the State of California.

(Marriage License must be presented to the Minister prior to the ceremony)

Confidential Marriage License

Age requirement: Male and Female must be at least 18 years old to apply

Issuing Locations: Confidential license may be issued by the County Clerk or duly licensed Notary Public.

Living Arrangements: The bride and groom must be living together as husband and wife at the time they apply for the license and must sign an affidavit on the license attesting to those facts.

County Requirements: The couple MUST be married in the county where the license is issued.

Confidential Record: the license is registered at the County Clerks Office in the county that it was purchased. Only the bride and groom may purchase copies of the marriage license after presenting a valid picture ID, along with the required fee. Copies are not available from the state offices.
